A Social Eye on Celebrity

We can’t help but be fascinated by celebrities. Through the saturation of television, magazines, blogs, what our friends spew out and who knows electronic messages implanted within our brains, we’ve come to love our elite from the Hollywood A class to the obscure D pool who are featured on YouTube. The fascination remains a mystery or we maybe in fact we don’t divulge in our secrets but sure enough we follow them, even going as far as visiting forums, adding fan pages/groups [Facebook, MySpace] and yes even Twitter, hoping though that it’s a verified account and not some dude who’s wasting his life pretending to be George Clooney. We shouldn’t worry though as we likely won’t be seeing the Cloon Dog register for his Twitter feed as he has been quoted as saying that he would rather have a rectal exam than having his own Facebook page. While it may not be Twitter, we can assume that Clooney won’t be using his phone to tweet via his villa in Italy.
We’ve previously chronicled our favorite celebrity Twitters on Social Media World, giving you our favorite reasons as to why we think Shaquille O’Neal, maybe even MC Hammer are some of the best celebrity twitterers. Because come on…after we’ve followed our friends, our family, our co-workers, former classmates and who knows anyone else who has come across in our lives…we’re likely add some of our favorite celebrities. While the talent level found on Twitter is likely to be minimal, you’re probably going to follow Ashton Kutcher than say…Daniel Day Lewis; you’re more than likely to find someone on there that you like.
For me I follow Kutcher (he had to beat CNN), his wife, actress Demi Moore, Ben Stiller and Shaq (clearly the reason why I joined Twitter). But I also have my share of personal favorites from those who were apart of the comedy troupe The State (Michael Ian Black, David Wain, Thomas Lennon, Michael Showalter),to actors Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (aka McLovin) and yes…even Diddy. I’ve also had my own share of celebrities follow me! as the only celebrity following me is Real Housewife of New York City Bethenny Frankel has followed my Twitter page. I guess this is what happens when you start tweeting while watching the Real Housewives of New York City.
But really? What makes a celebrity want to have his or her own Twitter page? Is it the connection of fans? We presume that to be the case but if that were to be true then we would see a flood of @ replies on that person’s Twitter feed. But more often than not our favorite celebrity twitterers have fairly pages. Minimal @ replies and yes have a knack for retweeting when someone else writes about them or about a celebrity that they’re best pals with, and who just so happens to also be on Twitter. Do you think Average Joe is going to find a ton of tweets about them when they put their name in Twitter Search? I know I’ve tried. It may sound like I’m condemning celebrities. I’m not. I do happen to enjoy the Tweets from the celebrities that I follow but if we are meant to believe that Twitter is a way to update, stay informed and communicate real time with anyone across the world then yes it would make sense for a celebrity Twitterer to share and discuss issues/news with their fans because in the end we are all the same, meaning we tweet about what we are going to buy in the grocery store.
But again we’re not a celebrity and while we may go to a Whole Foods store like Katy Perry, we likely won’t experience the same attention that Ms. Perry would. In such a obsessed celebrity world that we so happen to live in, it is significant to know that a lot of those celebrities who are hounded night and day still have their very own Twitter, an application that in essence tracks the places they’re going and what they are doing [though it depends whether or not that celebrity is open to discussing those specific things). If we condemn websites for publishing up to date whereabouts of celebrities (i.e. Gawker Stawker) the maybe it’s all fair now considering celebrities do in fact twitter there very about locations for their millions of followers to see. We have seen Shaq do this many times but are we likely to see his fellow A list stars doing the exact same thing. Who really knows, though signs point toward unlikely considering the ramifications and dangers associated with being a celebrity.
Celebrities are celebrities. If we often wonder how one could reach a level of success and fame so grand that it’s mindboggling to decipher…well maybe we shouldn’t think so hard in wondering why that person needs a Twitter page. But hey if it just so happens that Diddy or Zooey Deschanel replies to one of your tweets don’t be alarmed. Remember in the end they’re just like you and me. Sorta.
