What’s on Your Mind?

facebookstatusupdate I must confess. I love writing status updates. I’m absolutely addicted in telling everyone I know what’s going on in my day. I’m so addicted I probably would even write a status update that would say “I love writing status updates.” Sure the character limits found in Facebook, MySpace or Twitter (aka the be all and end all of Status Updatesville) may in fact limit me in fully expressing myself but sure enough I find a way to get my message across (I’m almost certain it’s with the use of abbreviations). Unfortunately my love for the status updates doesn’t parlay to those around me(cough… my friends…cough). Certain factors may be the very cause of it : not having enough time, the lack of desire of wanting to write something of importance or the big enchilada: not wanting to reveal oneself to one’s friends, family or even high school classmates from way back when.

What I say to that is: don’t be afraid especially in the big world of social media where you’re likely to find someone that shares the same interests as you and will gladly respond to you almost instantly. Status updates clearly aren’t just for writing what you did on a lazy Sunday (though you may find someone eating ice cream at 3 in the afternoon just like you!). The possibilities are endless really: from job networking to giving sage advice in maintaining a healthy lifestyle to even finding a long lost friend, status updates may in fact lead to achieving that goal. And sure enough the appeal and the popularity of writing a status updates are growing.

How so? For one thing you can follow this guide from Mashable listing the many different ways to get the most out of a status update. From using a status message to collect survey data using twtpoll to organizing a guest list for your next party using twtvite, status updates can allow you to do that. Want to cut down on your time with social media but still have the ability to check your email at the same time, then use: Xoopit. Want to get your status update to a multitude of people but still keep it in a nice and neat fashion…well you’re covered courtesy of Ping.fm and HelloTxt (outreach) to Seesmic Desktop and TweetDeck (visibility). And hey there’s nothing wrong with having a little bit of fun with status updates. Partake in games such as Play Twivia http://twitter.com/playtwivia will fill your need as you tweet not only your daily updates but answer a handful of trivia questions.

Mashable reports that 11 percent of online adults are using status updates. I have a good feeling that number is going to rise pretty soon.
