CES media coverage ruled by blogs

Last year (2006) may have been the first time that bloggers arrived in substantial numbers, but this year (2007) was the first year they completely took control of the media coverage, making the old media seem oh so irrelevant. Nearly every major story was blogged about before the show doors opened – and specialty blogs like Engadget and Gizmodo had armies of reporters (75 for Gizmodo alone) fanning out throughout the vast 27 football fields worth of convention centers that make up the Confoundingly Enormous Show (CES) each January. In addition, the coolest parties weren’t Sony and IBM, they were the Blog Business Summit and Bloghaus. Note as well that more than 12,000 news stories appeared on Google News by Day 2 and another 40 million stories from blogs and other online content vehicles. Yet, rather than making the process of figuring out the Next Big Thing confusing, the skilled surfer could sit in the pressroom above the fray and sort out the wheat from the chaff by skillfully surfing the blog posts as they piled up like so much snowfall.
